Adriaticaves is coming to an end with an international conference scheduled on March 12th, 2021 with the participation of the 7 partners from 6 nations (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro and Serbia), of the University of Bologna, the Interreg Adrion Programme Joint Secretariat and sustainable tourism experts.
The Maiella National Park, the leader of the European project, organizes an online event that will be introduced by its President Lucio Zazzara and its Director Luciano Di Martino. The project has been funded by the European Union, INTERREG V-B Adriatic-Ionian (ADRION) 2014-2020 Programme.
The main objective of Adriaticaves was to promote natural and archaeological heritage of the ADRION area karst landscapes, focusing on the sustainable development of accessible caves. All this was achieved by creating new professional figures in order to improve socio-economic conditions of mountain areas and by sharing best management practices of karst areas among the project partners.
Therefore, another important output was the creation of a joint cross-border sustainable tourism network within the ADRION area, which tackles the problem of tourism regulation to avoid conflicts with protected habitats and species. This network, formed by 37 caves (20 partner and 17 extra-project caves), has been formalized by signing the Charter of Caves, an international agreement signed by cave managers, with a discipline to ensure the sustainable tourism use of the underground cavities they manage.
A common international Action Plan for the 8310 habitat, drawn up in accordance with the Directive 92/43/EEC to ensure the conservation of the “Caves not open to the public” habitat and to guarantee that tourist activities are in compliance with the Europe legislation, completes the project outputs framework. Other than Maiella (Italy), project partners are: Regional Council of Shkodra (Albania), Cantonal Public Institution for Protected Natural Areas (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Velebit Nature Park Public Institution (Croazia), Authority for the Management of Parks and Biodiversity – Romagna (Italy), TC Lipa cave ldt (Montenegro), City of Čačak (Serbia).The event takes on even greater importance as it falls within the International Year of Caves and Karst.
